The details
- The Reserve Bank of India has cancelled the banking licence of Paytm Payments Bank under Section 22(4) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
- The cancellation is effective 24 April 2026, and the bank is prohibited from conducting any banking or related activities immediately.
- The RBI will apply to the High Court for the winding up of Paytm Payments Bank.
- The RBI stated that the bank's affairs were conducted detrimentally to the interests of the bank and its depositors.
- The regulator said the management's conduct was prejudicial to depositors and the public, and continuing operations would not serve any useful purpose or public interest.
- The RBI found that the bank failed to comply with its licence conditions.
- Earlier restrictions included a ban on onboarding new customers from 11 March 2022, and further curbs on deposits, credits, and top-ups in January and February 2024.
The bigger picture
- The RBI had previously imposed restrictions on Paytm Payments Bank, including a customer onboarding ban in March 2022 and a bar on deposits and top-ups in early 2024.
- The cancellation follows a long period of regulatory scrutiny and non-compliance with licence conditions.
- Parent company One 97 Communications (Paytm) stated it has no exposure to the bank and that the bank operates independently, with no involvement from Paytm's board or management.
- Paytm said the investment in Paytm Payments Bank was already impaired as of 31 March 2024, so there is no direct financial impact on the parent.
