The details
- Paytm reported its first full-year net profit of ₹552 Cr in FY26, compared to a loss of ₹663 Cr in FY25.
- Revenue from operations grew 22% to ₹8,437 Cr in FY26.
- EBITDA turned positive at ₹502 Cr in FY26, versus a loss of ₹1,506 Cr in FY25.
- In Q4 FY26, net profit was ₹183 Cr, revenue was ₹2,264 Cr (up 18% YoY), and EBITDA was ₹132 Cr.
- The company's cash balance stood at ₹13,315 Cr as of March 2026, partly from the December 2024 sale of its PayPay stake.
- Other income in FY26 was ₹854 Cr, including interest and treasury income from cash parked in fixed deposits, debt mutual funds, and dollar assets.
- Profit before tax was ₹582 Cr, meaning other income was 47% higher than PBT.
- The profit includes a one-time impairment of ₹190 Cr related to the Paytm First Games joint venture.
The bigger picture
- Profitability milestone comes with a caveat: core businesses are scaling, but profit is still supported by interest and treasury income from the large cash balance.
- Analyst Sunny Agarwal (SBI Securities) cited the J-curve phenomenon, where listed platform companies achieve scale-driven profitability after initial losses.
- Paytm became a majority Indian-owned company as of April 2026, with FII stake falling from 72.11% (June 2023) to 49.4% (March 2026).
- The RBI cancelled Paytm Payments Bank's banking license in April 2026 due to persistent non-compliance; Paytm says no financial or business impact as the investment was already impaired as of March 31, 2024.
About the business
- Paytm's core payments business includes UPI, QR codes, Soundbox, and card machines for merchants, as well as consumer UPI, recharges, and bill payments.
- It distributes financial products through an asset-light model: merchant loans, consumer credit (Postpaid, personal loans), and wealth products (equity broking, MTF, MF SIPs, digital gold).
- AI Soundbox is deployed at 1.51 Cr merchant locations and is evolving into a small business operating system with insights and notifications in multiple languages.
- AI is used in fraud detection, merchant onboarding, collections prioritisation, and software development, with custom small language models for Indian languages.
- Paytm Money offers Margin Trading Facility at 7.99% p.a. with up to 4X buying power on 1200+ stocks.
- The company also operates an insurance marketplace and distributes credit cards (Paytm HDFC, SBI Card, Axis Bank).
What happens next
- FY27 revenue growth is expected to be higher than 22%, with indirect expenses growing meaningfully slower than revenue.
- Growth levers include merchant payments expansion, merchant loan distribution growth, consumer lifecycle monetisation, and AI-led operating leverage.
- Cash will be deployed in capex, scaling the MTF business, AI investments, distribution, talent, and selective inorganic action at the right price.
- AI is positioned as the operating system for the entire business, with the CEO seeing the AI transition as a leapfrog opportunity.
