What they do
Gameskraft ran real-money rummy apps including RummyCulture and RummyPrime, which had about three crore users across India
What happened
The Enforcement Directorate provisionally attached about ₹442 crore of deposits, shops and homes on 25 September in its money-laundering case
Why it matters
Seized, frozen and attached assets now total about ₹2,843 crore; the allegations, including bot use against players, remain unproven in court
The details
- The Enforcement Directorate (ED, the agency that probes money laundering) attached assets worth about ₹442 crore linked to Gameskraft.
- The order came from its Bengaluru office on 25 September under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
- It covers fixed deposits, shops, a villa and homes held by family members, family trusts and shareholder-linked firms.
- RummyTime Technologies is also named in the same case.
- With this step, assets attached, frozen or seized in the probe add up to about ₹2,843 crore.
- An earlier order had attached property worth about ₹1,906 crore, and ₹495 crore in other assets was frozen.
The bigger picture
- The ED says the apps earned from players in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, where real-money gaming was banned.
- It alleges some players faced bots (automated programs) without being told, leading to heavy losses.
- It also questions about ₹1,035 crore spent on bonuses and referral offers to keep people playing.
- Three directors were arrested in May; the Karnataka High Court called the arrests illegal on 16 June and freed them.
- None of the allegations has been proven in court, and the investigation continues.
About the business
- Gameskraft runs online skill games on web and mobile, mainly card and board games such as rummy.
- Its first product was the RummyCulture app, launched in 2017.
- Players are everyday gamers across India who play against each other for cash prizes.
- Its main game is real-money rummy, where the platform earns from fees on the games played.
- The company is based in Bengaluru and was started by a former grocery-delivery engineer, with a team of a few hundred people.
What happens next
- The ED says its investigation is still going on.
