What they do

Molbio Diagnostics is a Goa-based maker of molecular diagnostic tests and devices, now listed on the stock exchanges

What happened

A fund managed by Motilal Oswal Alternates sold about 2% of the company for ₹306 crore in open market trades on Wednesday

Why it matters

HDFC Mutual Fund bought roughly 2% at the same price, and the fund had sold a larger block worth ₹394 crore a week earlier

The details

  • Business Excellence Trust III sold 23.28 lakh shares
  • Average price was about ₹1,315 a share
  • Sale value came to ₹306.26 crore
  • HDFC Mutual Fund picked up 23 lakh shares for ₹302.45 crore
  • The stock closed about 4% higher at ₹1,309.45

The bigger picture

  • The fund held about 11.5% as of August, so it is trimming after listing
  • Large buyers stepping in shows institutional demand for the stock
  • A similar ₹394 crore sale last week points to a steady exit

About the business

  • Molbio makes Truenat, a portable machine that runs lab-grade DNA tests (real-time PCR, a method that copies genetic material to detect germs) for infectious diseases such as TB.
  • It also sells a breast-screening device, a portable X-ray reading tool and digital pathology systems.
  • Buyers are government health programmes, aid agencies, hospitals and diagnostic labs, mostly in places with few central labs.
  • It earns by selling the machines and, more importantly, the test kits used with them; most revenue comes from TB kits sold to Indian and overseas public health programmes.
  • It is used in 90+ countries, with over 8,293 Truenat systems installed in India.
  • It is based in Verna, Goa, and does research through its subsidiary Bigtec Labs.
