Revenue multiples and how markets price startups
A revenue multiple is a company's value divided by its yearly revenue. A startup valued at ₹1,000 crore with ₹100 crore of annual revenue is priced at 10 times revenue. Investors use it as a quick yardstick, especially when a company has no profit yet.

What is a revenue multiple?
A revenue multiple is one number divided by another: the value of the company divided by its revenue over a year. A company worth ₹600 crore with revenue of ₹60 crore trades at a 10x revenue multiple. The same idea is called a price-to-sales ratio for listed companies and an EV to revenue multiple when the value counts debt and cash too.
Investors use it because many startups have no profit, so the usual price-to-earnings ratio cannot be calculated. Revenue exists even when profit does not, so it gives a way to compare a company with others and with its own past rounds.
Which revenue number is used?
There are several choices, and they change the multiple a lot. Trailing revenue is what the company earned over the last twelve months. Forward revenue is what it is expected to earn over the next twelve. Annualised run rate takes the latest month or quarter and multiplies it up to a year. For software companies, annual recurring revenue is common (see the guide on ARR and MRR).
A company valued at ₹1,000 crore is at 10x on trailing revenue of ₹100 crore, but only 6.7x on forward revenue of ₹150 crore. When someone quotes a multiple, always ask which revenue it uses. Headlines often compare a multiple on forward revenue with another on trailing revenue, which is not a fair comparison.
What decides whether a multiple is high or low?
Growth is the biggest factor. A company doubling revenue every year is usually priced at a higher multiple than one growing 15 per cent. The second factor is margins: a business that keeps 80 paise of each rupee after direct costs is worth more per rupee of revenue than one that keeps 15 paise. The third is the quality of revenue. Recurring revenue from subscriptions that customers rarely cancel earns more than one-off sales.
Other factors include how big the market is, how well customers are retained, the strength of the team, and how quickly the company can reach profit. Market mood matters too: when interest rates are low and investors are keen, multiples rise, and when money gets tighter, they fall. This is why startup valuations in India were generally higher in 2021 than in later years, and why a down round can reflect the market and not only the company.
- Faster growth tends to mean a higher multiple.
- Higher gross margin tends to mean a higher multiple.
- Recurring, sticky revenue is valued above one-off sales.
- Market conditions can move multiples for every company at once.
How do multiples differ across sectors?
Software companies usually command higher multiples than companies that move physical goods, because software has high gross margins and scales cheaply. Marketplaces and consumer brands sit in between and vary widely. Lenders and financial firms are often valued on assets, loan book or earnings, not on revenue.
For this reason, the sensible comparison is with similar companies. A quick commerce company at 3x revenue is not cheap just because a software company is at 10x. Each is judged against its own peers, and what its business model allows.
How are revenue multiples used in funding and IPOs?
In a private funding round, founders and investors often start by looking at the multiples of similar companies, public or private, and then argue over growth and risk to land on a valuation. The multiple is a starting point for the conversation, not the answer. In an IPO, bankers and investors compare the issue with listed peers, and the multiple on revenue or earnings is part of how the price band is judged.
After a company lists, its multiple is visible every day because the market cap and the reported revenue are both public. Listed Indian new-age companies have been valued at widely different multiples over time, which shows how much sentiment moves them.
What are the limits of revenue multiples?
Revenue ignores cost. Two companies with the same revenue and the same multiple can be very different if one is profitable and the other burns heavily. The measure also depends on how revenue is counted. A marketplace that reports only commission shows less revenue than a trader reporting the full sale value, so the same business can look expensive or cheap. See the guides on GMV versus revenue and take rate.
So use the multiple as one clue next to growth, margin, retention and cash. It is a way to ask questions, not to settle them. Nothing here is investment advice.
A worked example
Example with made-up numbers. A SaaS startup has annual recurring revenue of ₹80 crore, growing 60 per cent a year, with a gross margin of 75 per cent. Investors in similar companies are paying about 8 to 12 times forward revenue. Forward revenue is ₹128 crore (₹80 crore plus 60 per cent). At 8x, the company is worth ₹1,024 crore. At 12x, it is worth ₹1,536 crore. A packaged-food brand with the same ₹80 crore revenue, growing 15 per cent with a gross margin of 35 per cent, might be priced at 2 to 3 times revenue, or ₹160 crore to ₹240 crore. Same revenue, very different value, because growth and margin differ.

What is a revenue multiple?
It is a company's value divided by its yearly revenue. A company worth ₹500 crore with ₹50 crore in revenue is valued at 10 times revenue. Investors use it to compare companies that do not yet make a profit.
What is a good revenue multiple for a startup?
There is no fixed answer. It depends on growth, margins, the type of revenue and market conditions. Compare with similar companies at a similar stage, and check whether the multiple uses trailing or forward revenue.
What is the difference between trailing and forward revenue multiples?
A trailing multiple uses revenue earned in the last twelve months. A forward multiple uses revenue expected in the next twelve. Forward multiples look lower for growing companies because the revenue figure is larger.
Why do software startups get higher multiples?
Software has high gross margins and can serve more customers at little extra cost, so each rupee of revenue turns into more profit as the company scales. Recurring subscriptions also make revenue more predictable.
Can a revenue multiple be misleading?
Yes. It ignores costs and can change with how revenue is counted. A marketplace that books only its commission looks different from a company that books the full sale value, so context is needed.
