How to find investors for a startup in India

By · Startup Decoded

Finding the right investor takes research and patience more than luck. The best approach is to build a short list of investors who back your stage and sector, then reach them through warm introductions. These answers walk through the steps.

The answers

How do I find investors for my startup in India?

Start by listing investors who have backed companies like yours, at your stage. Look at their portfolio pages, funding news and investor profiles. Then reach them through founders they have backed, mutual contacts, angel networks or accelerator programmes. A short, targeted list of 30 to 50 beats a mass email.

Where can I find a list of Indian venture capital firms?

Fund websites, funding news, and the investor pages on StopDown list active investors with their recent deals. Public bodies such as SIDBI and Startup India also list some programmes. Always check a fund's current website, as focus and cheque sizes change.

How do I find investors in my sector?

Look at recent funding news in your sector and note who invested. Investors who backed three or four companies in your space understand the market. StopDown's sector list below shows who has been active in each sector recently.

How do I get a warm introduction to an investor?

Ask a founder the investor has backed, a lawyer, an advisor or a fellow investor to introduce you. Send them a short forwardable email, with two or three lines on your company and what you want. A warm introduction usually gets a much better response than a cold email.

Is it okay to cold email an investor?

Yes, if you do it well. Many investors read cold emails, especially at the early stage. Keep it short: what you build, your key number, why that investor, and a clear ask. Skip long attachments. Do not email the same person repeatedly.

What should I include when I contact an investor?

Include one line on what you do, one on who you are, one or two numbers that show progress, and the round you are raising. Add a link to a short deck. Explain why you chose this investor, for example a similar company in their portfolio.

What is the best way to reach angel investors?

Join angel networks, apply through platforms such as LetsVenture, attend startup events and ask for introductions through founders. Many angels invest after meeting a founder a few times, so build a relationship before you ask.

Can online platforms help me find investors?

Yes. Platforms like LetsVenture and some angel networks let you submit your startup for review. They can help, but they are not a replacement for direct outreach. Check any fees and terms before signing up.

Do incubators and accelerators help in finding investors?

They often do. Many run demo days where you pitch to investors, and they give introductions. Examples include Y Combinator, Antler, Techstars and programmes run by IITs and IIMs. Read the terms, since most take equity.

How do government schemes help me find investors?

Startup India's Fund of Funds for Startups, managed by SIDBI, invests through registered venture funds rather than directly in startups. The Startup India Seed Fund Scheme gives money to selected incubators, which then support startups. Check the Startup India website for current rules.

How many investors should I talk to?

Most founders talk to dozens before closing a round. Keep a simple tracker with names, stages and next steps. Talk to several at once, so that one slow answer does not stall your round.

What do investors check before they invest?

They check your team, product, market, numbers and legal records, in a process called due diligence. They may call your customers and past colleagues. Keep your company records, cap table and agreements clean from day one.

How do I know which investors to avoid?

Be wary of anyone who asks for large upfront fees to arrange funding, guarantees a deal, or avoids giving references. Genuine investors do not charge to consider your pitch. Ask for names of founders they have backed and speak to them.

When is the right time to start looking for investors?

Start early, ideally three to six months before you need the money. Have some proof of progress, a clear story and a plan for the funds. If you cannot explain what the money will achieve, wait.
