The answers
Who are the top angel investors in India?
There is no official ranking, so be careful with lists that claim one. Well-known angels include Kunal Shah, Anupam Mittal, Binny Bansal, Nikhil Kamath, Namita Thapar, Aman Gupta, Ronnie Screwvala and Kunal Bahl. Many of them are founders or executives who invest in startups on the side. The live list below shows which angels have been named most often in recent stories.
What is an angel investor?
An angel investor is an individual who invests their own money in a young company, usually before venture funds step in. They often get shares or a convertible instrument in return. Many are former founders who also offer advice and introductions.
How much money do angel investors put in?
In India, a single angel cheque is commonly from a few lakh rupees to a few crore rupees, depending on the person and the stage. Angel networks and syndicates combine cheques from many members. Check each investor's stated range, since these figures vary widely.
How much equity do angel investors take?
It depends on the valuation and how much you raise. Early rounds commonly give away around 5 to 20 per cent in total, but there is no fixed rule. If you raise ₹1 crore at a ₹9 crore pre-money valuation (an example), the post-money valuation is ₹10 crore and the investors hold 10 per cent.
What is an angel network?
An angel network is a group of individual investors who review deals together and often invest as a syndicate. Examples in India include Indian Angel Network, Mumbai Angels and LetsVenture's angel community. A network gives founders access to many investors with one pitch.
What is the difference between an angel and a VC?
An angel uses personal money and can decide fast. A VC fund invests other people's money, has a formal process and usually writes larger cheques. Angels often come in before the first institutional round. Many VCs also expect to see respected angels already on the cap table.
How do I find angel investors in India?
Start with your own network and ask founders you respect for warm introductions. Then look at angel networks, platforms such as LetsVenture, and angel programmes at incubators. Research the angels who have backed similar companies, and write a short, specific message on why you are a fit.
Do angels invest in first-time founders?
Yes, many do. At this stage, investors back the team, the problem and early signs of progress, since there is little revenue. Showing a working prototype, early users or paid pilots makes your case stronger than an idea alone.
Do angel investors take a board seat?
Usually not at the smallest cheque sizes. An angel may get information rights, and a large or lead angel may ask for an observer seat or a board seat. Agree this in writing at the time of investing.
What do angel investors look for?
Angels usually look at the founding team, the size of the problem, early traction and whether the founders can learn quickly. They also check that the cap table is clean and that the founders are fully committed. Many also ask whether they can add value, such as with hiring or customers.
Is angel tax still applicable in India?
As of October 2026, angel tax has been removed. The July 2024 Budget abolished the angel tax from assessment year 2025-26 (money raised from 1 April 2024 onward), which covers investments by resident and non-resident investors. Rules can change, so confirm the current position with a chartered accountant before a round.
What is a SAFE or convertible note, and do angels use them?
Both let an angel invest now and get shares later, at the next priced round. A convertible note is a loan that converts into shares, while a SAFE is a simple agreement for future equity. Angels use them to avoid arguing over valuation too early. Indian rules affect how each can be used, so get legal advice.
Can celebrities and business leaders be angel investors?
Yes. Several well-known business leaders and public figures invest in startups, and some appear on Shark Tank India. Their name can bring attention, but check what else they offer, such as time, networks or customers.
How do angels make money?
They make money when the company is sold, goes public, or when they sell their shares to another investor in a later round. This can take many years, and many angel investments return nothing. Because of that, serious angels spread their money across many companies.
